If you have Starlink, you have probably run a speed test and seen numbers well above what a remote employer asks for. Then the application says satellite is not allowed, and the speed doesn't matter. This page explains why, because it isn't arbitrary.
Most large remote employers write their requirement as a rule about how the connection is delivered, not how fast it goes. Concentrix's postings say "no wireless/hotspots or satellite." Foundever says "hardwired internet connection (no satellite or wireless)." Teleperformance lists satellite, mobile data, P2P and VPN as connections that "cannot" be used. Arise's equipment policy says satellite is "not permitted." None of those sentences contain a speed number.
You can't test your way past a rule about connection type. A faster dish is still a dish.
Satellite round-trips are longer and less consistent than a wired line. Low-earth-orbit service has improved this a lot — but employers running softphones and screen-sharing on hundreds of agents set policy for the worst case, not the average. Teleperformance publishes a latency ceiling of 50 ms; Conduent requires ping of 175 ms or less. Fiber typically runs under 20 ms.
Heavy rain, snow, and tree cover interrupt satellite signal. An agent who drops mid-call is a support ticket for the employer. A buried fiber line does not care about the weather.
Some clients — especially healthcare and financial — treat any wireless hop as a risk to protected data and write "wired only" into the contract with the outsourcer. Working Solutions says it plainly: "All clients have contractual stipulations against wireless internet usage."
A wired connection — fiber, cable, or DSL — with an Ethernet cable from your computer to the router. Fiber is the strongest option because upload and download are the same speed, latency is lowest, and it is unaffected by weather.
